Ayaan Hirsi Ali and UNHCR

An interiew in The Indepenent with Ayaan Hirsi Ali - she recounts the violence she endured as a child and climate of violence she now lives with under a fatwa. Ali has caused controversy on a number of different issues and she tends to be associated with fighting against Islam. This fight often overshadows the her work on violence against women, which is primarily what got her elected in the Netherlands and what provoked the fatwa.

UNHCR has committed an additional $3.4 million to women and girls in high risk situations. Guterres, UN High Commission for Refugees, had this to say about it:
"We, especially men, are often reticent to speak out to condemn violence against women and girls. But this should not be viewed as a personal matter; it is an essential part of our work to promote international protection," added Guterres, who said he always made it a point to listen to women and children during field trips to understand their concerns and determine if "we are providing them with the protection they need."
